Kirat Babani

Kirat Babani

Biography

Kirat Babani was born on 3rd January 1922 in the village of Moro Lakho, Dist. Nawabshah, Sindh, in the house of Choithram Babani. He lost his father at the age of four, and the family moved from the village, ultimately settling in Nawabshah. At Wills High School he was class monitor from standard V to XI, and his teacher Rochiram Thawani kindled in him a lifelong spirit of patriotism.

That spark grew as he formed a 'Forward Students Union'. During the Quit India movement of 1942 he led a students rally through Nawabshah and was imprisoned; over the year he spent eleven months behind bars. In jail at Sukkur he met the communist leader Sobho Gyanchandani, whose gift of a book on socialism opened a new world to him. He stood seventh among some five thousand students of Sindh in his matriculation, and went on to D. J. College, Karachi, where his first story 'Jilebyun jo Chor' was published in Nai Dunya.

After Partition he reached Bombay in 1949 with little more than seventeen rupees, took his B.A. and LL.B., and threw himself into the movement to save Sindhi. As secretary of the Sindhi Boli and Lipi Committee he helped - with the lawyer Ram Jethmalani - to overturn the 1950 order that would have forced a single script on the language, and he campaigned until Sindhi was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in 1967.

In 1972 he was unanimously elected president of the Akhil Bharat Sindhi Boli Ain Sahat Sabha, a post he held for eighteen years. He has penned some fifteen books and published 'Sindh Rises' and 'Sindh Sujag' since 1991. In the truest sense he is a pride of the Sindhi community.
