Biography & Profile
Vasdev Mohi is an eminent Sindhi poet, critic and short story writer who has enriched Sindhi poetry with clarity of expression and profundity of thought. Born at Mirpur Khas, Sindh (now in Pakistan) on 2nd March 1944, he acquired his Masters degree in English literature from Gujarat University. After a short stint at the LIC of India he turned to teaching English, first at Adarsh High School, Ahmedabad and then at the Indian High School, Dubai, from where he retired as Head of the English department.
Mohi emerged as an icon of the first generation of modern Sindhi poetry, with a rare combination of sharpness of content and perspicuity of elocution. He has a powerful grip on both traditional prosodic forms and the modern sensibility of new poetry (Naee-n Kavita). With his very first collection Tazaad (Contradictions, 1976) he made a mark on both sides of the border, and has since walked steadfastly on the path of poetry, prose, playwriting and creative criticism.
He was a member of the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi and Convener of its Sindhi Advisory Board from 2008 to 2012, convening the Indo-Pak Sindhi Writers Seminar in New Delhi and leading a delegation of Indian writers to China. He has about 25 books to his credit, including original, translated and edited work.
