Prabhu 'Wafa'

Prabhu 'Wafa'

Biography

Prabhu 'Wafa' was born on 19th September 1915 in Larkana, Sindh (now in Pakistan) - a town then known as a nest of singing birds, home to great poets like Kishinchand Bewas and Hundraj Dukhayal. Born into an affluent family, his father Diwan Jotumal Chhugani was a lawyer fond of poetry and music, and the family were followers of the Sufi and Vedantic saint Rohal Fakir. It was at the saint's dargah that Prabhu came under the influence of Sufism, which gave him a deep understanding of the vicissitudes of mankind.

He learnt the first lessons of prosody under the master poet Nawazali Niyaz - completing all the intricate lessons in just three days - and emerged a mature poet. He studied at Government High School, Larkana, and D. J. Sindh College, Karachi, becoming a graduate of the University of Bombay in 1938.

By nature loving, kind and forgiving, Wafa is a Sufi humanist and a citizen of the world, with special love for Sindh and India. He has composed poems in all forms - ghazal, geet, baet, vaaee, rubaaee and haiku.
