Shrimati Kala Prakash

Shrimati Kala Prakash

Biography

Kala Prakash, born in 1934 in Karachi (now in Pakistan), began writing Sindhi short stories in 1953, when her first story 'Dohi Bedohi' was published in Naeen Duniya, a prominent literary monthly from Mumbai. In 1954 she married Shri Moti Prakash, another well-known writer; together they are perhaps the only writer couple who are both Sahitya Akademi Award winners.

In 1977 she settled in Dubai with her family, finally migrating to India after Moti Prakash's retirement in 2002. Simple in attire and warm by nature, Kala has written numerous short stories across three collections and a travelogue of pen-portraits from her 1984 visit to Sindh. She chooses simple words common in Sindhi households, and her style has a freshness and spontaneity free of adornment or exaggeration.

She was among the early members of the Sindhi Sahit Mandal, Mumbai - the first Sindhi Writers Association - and served for a considerable time as its Honorary Joint Secretary. Of late she has written on classical poets like Shah Latif and Sachal.
